McClatchey had collapsed and was unconscious. He thought he'd had a seizure. Instead it was "V-Fib" -- ventricular fibrillation – or what is commonly known as cardiac arrest.
"The survival rate is between one and five percent, and so most -- 95 to 97 percent -- die at home and they don't never get to the hospital,” said Dr. Charles Wilmer, a cardiologist at Piedmont.
The fact that McClatchey got to the hospital alive was amazing enough. What happened next made medical history.
"He was so unstable that he would literally be shocked, go back into regular rhythm ong enough to start to wake up and then he would fibrillate again, and lose consciousness and we'd have to shock him again,” Dr. Wilmer said.
In the first hour, McClatchey's heart stopped 50 times and he could see it coming. "I remember seeing the heart monitor. It's kind of amazing to watch your own heart….And you know you have about three or four seconds before you're gonna black out," he said.
Dr. Wilmer and his team had never seen anything like this before. "We really were sort of thinking on the go -- how can we save this man's life? -- We've tried all of the proven therapies, he's not living, so let's take a chance, let's take a step [and] see if we can advance the science,” he said.

I stopped the car and asked, "Wait a minute. What do you mean when you say you're 'seeing those military ads every day'?"
"We have to watch this short thing every morning in homeroom called 'Channel One News'," Isa explained with a weary tone. "It's educational, supposedly. You know, the day's news, so we'll be up on current events. But in between the stories, there are more and more ads for the Army and the Marines."

As noted in my recent articles on military recruitment and the coming draft, for two years my daughter and I have been fighting the aggressive and often sneaky efforts of military recruiters to sign her up. Certainly they don't want her for her physical prowess-she weighs 98 pounds-so I can only assume they want her for other reasons. Either they've seen her high verbal scores, or they just want young bodies--even a tiny one--to serve as cannon fodder.
With a military recruiter present every day in the cafeteria, military "speakers" visiting classrooms, and huge recruiting posters in the guidance office, perhaps it's not surprising that teachers and even guidance counselors have been influenced by the constant hum of "enlist, enlist, enlist". Students at Isa's school are told that, yes, they could consider college, but that it's "very expensive" and "may not guarantee you a job", while the military "will pay for college" and "practically guarantees you'll have a great career". Oh, and "a big cash bonus right now if you sign up today!"
....
"It's just everywhere", Isa continued. "Here's an example: In gym we don't exercise or play sports like we used to do-now we "sound off", just like in the military, while running and doing jumping jacks, push-ups, and pull-ups. The freshmen are told to shout, "one, two!", then the sophomores are supposed to answer, "three, four!", and then the whole group of us has to say "Sound off!" I mean it's ridiculous Mom! How are you supposed to exercise while you're shouting at the top of your lungs?"
As I started driving again, I took a moment to reflect on this "military culture" that's replacing the educational culture in America's public schools.

"Military men are just dumb stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy." - Henry Kissinger, quoted in "Kiss the Boys Goodbye: How the United States Betrayed Its Own POW's in Vietnam"
Vietnam was a chemical war for oil, permanently contaminating large regions and countries downriver with Agent Orange, and environmentally the most devastating war in world history. But since 1991, the U.S. has staged four nuclear wars using depleted uranium weaponry, which, like Agent Orange, meets the U.S. government definition of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Vast regions in the Middle East and Central Asia have been permanently contaminated with radiation.
And what about our soldiers? Terry Jemison of the Department of Veterans Affairs reported this week to the American Free Press that "Gulf-era veterans" now on medical disability since 1991 number 518,739, with only 7,035 reported wounded in Iraq in that same 14-year period.
This week the American Free Press dropped a "dirty bomb" on the Pentagon by reporting that eight out of 20 men who served in one unit in the 2003 U.S. military offensive in Iraq now have malignancies. That means that 40 percent of the soldiers in that unit have developed malignancies in just 16 months.

In some veterans' families now, the only normal or healthy members of the family are the children born before the war.

This is an anomaly by historical standards: In the 19th century, when the foreign-born population of the United States was much higher, so was the percentage of foreigners serving in the military. During the Civil War, at least 20 percent of Union soldiers were immigrants, and many of them had just stepped off the boat before donning blue uniforms. There were even entire units, like the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (the Scandinavian Regiment) and Gen. Louis Blenker's German Division, where English was hardly spoken.
The military would do well today to open its ranks not only to legal immigrants but also to illegal ones and, as important, to untold numbers of young men and women who are not here now but would like to come. No doubt many would be willing to serve for some set period in return for one of the world's most precious commodities - U.S. citizenship. Open up recruiting stations from Budapest to Bangkok, Cape Town to Cairo, Montreal to Mexico City. Some might deride those who sign up as mercenaries, but these troops would have significantly different motives from the usual soldier of fortune.
The simplest thing to do would be to sign up foreigners for the regular U.S. military, but it would also make sense to create a unit whose enlisted ranks would be composed entirely of non-Americans, led by U.S. officers and NCOs.
Call it the Freedom Legion. As its name implies, this unit would be modeled on the French Foreign Legion, except, again, U.S. citizenship would be part of the "pay."

In the West, Islam is the fastest growing religion both amongst immigrants and the indigenous community. Between 1989 and 1998 the Islamic population in Europe grew by over 100 percent, to 14 million (approximately 2 percent of the population), according to United Nations statistics [2]. "Within the next 20 years the number of British converts will equal or overtake the immigrant Muslim community that brought the faith here", says Rose Kendrick the author of a textbook guide to the Koran [3]. America is not immune from this phenomenon. One expert estimates that 25,000 people a year become Muslims in the US; some clerics say they have seen conversion rates quadruple since Sept. 11[4].
Conversion figures aside, the attitudes of Muslims living in the West towards secular liberalism is equally damning. A recent ICM poll surveying Muslim attitudes in Britain published the following results: 81% view freedom of speech as a means of insulting Islam, 61% support the Sharia, 88% want Islam in schools, and 60% do not think they need to integrate.
If this is the outlook of Muslims in one of the main citadels of enlightenment then one can only guess the stance of Muslim world towards secular liberal values. Suffice to say that the West has failed to convince the Muslim masses that Western culture is better than Islam.
Therefore the West and their puppets stand alone in coercing the ummah to accept Western values. While the ummah stands firm rejecting Western culture and calling for the return of a global Islamic state. The two positions are irreconcilable and polarisation in viewpoints between the regimes and its people cannot continue indefinitely.
It is only a matter of time before Muslims overthrow the secular order, which has been unjustly imposed upon them. Sensing the failure of its surrogates to contain political Islam, the West under the pretext of fighting terrorism has sought to re-occupy the Muslim lands in a desperate bid to reinforce its values and to safeguard its material interests.

In December 2003, the Medicare Prescription Drug and Modernization Act was passed. Many seniors expected the new law to provide relief for the ever-rising prescription drug costs but they were sadly mistaken. We recently learned that instead of costing tax payers $400 billion, the bill is going to cost more than $1.3 Trillion, over the next 10 years, and the only ones benefiting from it are the pharmaceutical companies and HMOs.
The new law will not save tax payers any money because it specifically bars Medicare from negotiating for better drug prices like the Department of Veterans Affairs does, and it bans the importation of cheaper drugs from neighboring Canada and other countries. The notion that the bill will provide any meaningful savings for seniors is unlikely.
...
The card program in itself, is a scam. There are over 40 million Medicare beneficiaries in the country. Multiply that number times $30 and the first expected windfall of the scam becomes obvious. However, seniors were not half as dumb as Bush thought, and only a fraction of the beneficiaries even bothered to buy the cards.
...
Bush claimed that using the cards would result in discounts of 10 to 25%, which amounts to a 0% discount considering the fact that drug prices increased by nearly 22% over the past 3 years. The dramatic increase in prices offset any potential savings on drugs purchased with the cards. Only the drug companies stand to make money with this deal.

[This is why I still think deflation is coming, people have no money. If people have no money or very little money, they can’t afford to pay huge amounts for things. But companies still need to make a pretense of selling things even if they are really making their money by stealing from the fedeal treasury, therefore in order to unload their stuff they are going to have to cut prices which = deflation. This bankruptcy bill is only going to speed the arrival of that situation.]
Gross! How to take a horrible bill and make it genuinely loathsome. Look at this -- look at what they are doing with this bankruptcy bill.
The bankruptcy bill was a gift to big bankers and credit card companies to begin with, in return for copious showers of campaign contributions to our very own elected representatives in Congress. Same old, same old.
The big lenders, the kind who can legally jack up your interest rates at any time for any reason (read that fine print, folks), have a problem. More and more Americans are going broke. So they declare bankruptcy under Chapter 7, which wipes out their credit for 10 years, but gives them a chance to start over without debt. So, naturally, the banks want to make it harder to declare bankruptcy by forcing people to file under Chapter 13, only a partial diminution of debt.
...
If you don't like that feature of the bankruptcy bill, try this one: You may have read of the hardship on the families of those who have been called to fight in Iraq, including, of course, severe financial stress leading to many bankruptcies. Democrats in the Senate tried to put an amendment on this bill exempting military personnel, and the Republicans voted it down.

German police arrested Ernst Zundel Tuesday evening, immediately upon his arrival at the Frankfurt airport. The specially chartered plane left Toronto Canada in a fierce snow-storm and landed just after 10 p.m. (local time).
German authorities took Zundel into custody on charges that he had publicly denied the Holocaust, which is illegal in that country. Apparently the allegations relate to a website "ZundelSite", located on the Internet at www.zundelsite.org because Zundel has not physically been in Germany for many years.
Zundel had been held for more than two years in Canada, under a national security certificate, which allows indefinite detention on secret evidence without charge or trial.
With no criminal record in Canada and having lived there from 1958 to 2000, Ernst Zundel, 65, was held in solitary confinement after he was returned to Canada in what many people have described as a political kidnapping by U.S. authorities in Tennessee, where he had been living with his American wife.

In the summer of 1983, this same informant told the Mossad about a large Mercedes truck that was being fitted by the Shi'ite Muslims with spaces that could hold bombs. He said it had even larger than usual spaces for this, so that whatever it was destined for was going to be a major target. Now, the Mossad knew that, for size, there were only a few logical targets, one of which must be the U.S. compound. The question then was whether or not to warn the Americans to be on particular alert for a truck matching the description.
The decision was too important to be taken in the Beirut station, so it was passed along to Tel Aviv, where Admony, then head of Mossad, decided they would simply give the Americans the usual general warning, a vague notice that they had reason to believe someone might be planning an operation against them. But this was so general, and so commonplace, it was like sending a weather report; unlikely to raise any particular alarm or prompt increased security precautions. In the six months following receipt of this information, for example, there were more than 100 general warnings of car-bomb attacks. One more would not heighten U.S. concerns or surveillance.
Admony, in refusing to give the Americans specific information on the truck, said, "No, we're not there to protect Americans. They're a big country. Send only the regular information."
At the same time, however, all Israeli installations were given the specific details and warned to watch for a truck matching the description of the Mercedes.
At 6:20 a.m. on October 23, 1983, a large Mercedes truck approached the Beirut airport, passing well within sight of Israeli sentries in their nearby base, going through a Lebanese.army checkpoint, and turning left into the parking lot. A U.S. Marine guard reported with alarm that the truck was gathering speed, but before he could do anything, the truck roared toward the entrance of the four-story reinforced concme Aviation Safety Building, used as headquarters for the Eighth Marine Battalion, crashing through a wrought-iron pate, hitting the sand-bagged guard post, smashing through another barrier, and ramming over a wall of sandbags into the lobby, exploding with such a terrific force that the building was instantly reduced to rubble.

There is not a single person out there right now who is listening to any of the one zillion lifeless Clear Channel or Infinity-owned rock stations anywhere in the nation who is saying to themselves, gosh this KLOG station is just exceptionally good and clever and smart and plays amazingly fresh music and makes me want to listen all the time and oh my God I am so going to pick up the phone right now and try to be the 157th caller so I can win tickets to go see Dave Matthews live in Portland! Woo!
Solar flares and frigid temperatures are believed to be working with human chemicals to eat away at the protective ozone layer above the North Pole, surprising scientists who have been looking for evidence that the planet's ozone layer is healing.
The ozone layer protects Earth from dangerous ultraviolet radiation, which can cause skin cancer.

Paul Wolfowitz, the deputy secretary of defense, is under serious consideration to become the next president of the World Bank, according to a source in the administration of George W. Bush.
Another new candidate to emerge is Carly Fiorina, who lost her job as chief executive of Hewlett-Packard two weeks ago, the official said on condition of anonymity.
Robert Zoellick, until last week the U.S. trade representative, had been the White House's candidate to replace James Wolfensohn, the current bank president, who completes his second five-year term in May.

Hersh knows these things, he says, because, "If you disagree, you can't get to the table. The only guys who get to the table are the guys who drink the Kool-Aid," and so many people inside the government who don't buy this fantasy are dying to talk to him.
Many people wanted to believe that Bush didn't really mean it when, only seconds after solemnly swearing to uphold the Constitution in his second inaugural address on Jan. 20, he vowed to continue his "global democratic revolution."

Why else would our government be picking a fight with Syria and Iran? They have been doing everything they can to please the U.S. since 9/11. They've "been very helpful," in fighting al-Qaeda types, and have turned over old Iraqi Ba'ath party members – heck, the Syrians have even tortured a Canadian for us.

A Federal Express courier truck carrying a package of anthrax collided with a car in central Winnipeg on Wednesday, but officials say the package was not damaged in the crash. The truck was carrying five packages to the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health, the federal virology lab downtown. The packages contained samples of anthrax, E. coli, salmonella, tuberculosis, influenza and a sexually transmitted disease.

If you are parking life savings or investments in US dollars it is time to worry, says American billionaire George Soros, granddaddy of currency trading.
The mighty American dollar has lost 40 percent of its value in the past two years against other currencies and is expected to lose 20 percent more, Soros declared last week.
Coming from a man who amassed a $5 billion fortune buying and selling currencies since the 1980s, it was a heart-stopping statement.
