Comcast, the top U.S. cable TV network operator, is being sued by a Seattle-area woman for disclosing her name and contact information, court records showed Thursday.

In a lawsuit filed in King County, Wash., Dawnell Leadbetter said that she was contacted by a debt collection agency in January and told to pay a $4,500 for downloading copyright-protected music or face a lawsuit for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Leadbetter, a mother of two teenage children, was a customer of Comcast's high-speed Internet access service.

The company, Settlement Support Center, based in Washington state, was using information that the Recording Industry of Association of America had obtained in a Philadelphia lawsuit over the illegal sharing of digital music files, said Lory Lybeck, the lawyer representing Leadbetter

The matter of brand names in contracts isn't limited to technology, however. The OMB pointed to an $81 million contract for office supplies from one unnamed federal agency that specified a vendor number unique to one large office-supply company. "In these examples, the use of brand name specifications limited competition and diminished the likelihood the agency purchased the best value product," the memo said. "There is also a significant risk of severely limiting small business participation in these cases."

They found that eggs that had been trapped beneath the sediment years ago had never hatched, but miraculously, were still alive.

A little incubation and bingo, the eggs hatched into animals not as they appear today, but long ago when the eggs were first deposited on the floor of the lake. How they survived all that time is a great mystery.

Opponents of the legislation said that the move by Congress was a harsh attack on the poorest and most needy and came just one day after the House adopted a measure of huge potential benefit to the wealthiest when it voted to eliminate the estate tax.

"The G.O.P. is practicing Robin Hood in reverse," said Representative John Conyers Jr. of Michigan, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee. "Last night they repealed the estate tax, a gift to the wealthiest individuals in our society. Today they pushed through the special-interest bankruptcy bill, punishing the very poorest members of society. This shows all the world that all of that talk about values in the last election was just that - talk."

[There ought to be some way for crooked scientists to be disbarred or something.]

In an interview yesterday, vom Saal, a reproductive biologist at University of Missouri, Columbia, said there is now an "overwhelming weight of evidence" that the plastics compound is harmful.

"This is a snowball running down a hill, where the evidence is accumulating at a faster and faster rate," vom Saal said. "You can't open a scientific journal related to sex hormones and not read an article that would just floor you about this chemical. ... The chemical industry's position that this is a weak chemical has been proven totally false. This is a phenomenally potent chemical as a sex hormone."

In their study, vom Saal and Hughes suggest an explanation for conflicting results of studies: 100 percent of the 11 funded by chemical companies found no risk, while 90 percent of the 104 government-funded, nonindustry studies reported harmful effects.

Skipping along a few words we come to "old-style frontier justice," which suggests to readers that the "right-wing militia" is looking for some kind of violent showdown with illegals. In reality, the Minutemen have specifically stated that they will neither confront nor apprehend anyone themselves, but instead only report lawbreakers to the proper authorities. The same can be said about a reference to "vigilantes" further on in the article.

So, are you beginning to see a pattern? We,ve just dissected basically one sentence from one article on a politically sensitive issue and it absolutely reeks of misinformation and bias. And you can bet your sweet bippy this wasn,t just an aberration that fell through the cracks of an otherwise well-oiled journalistic machine that efficiently weeds out bad information.

[So this woman was not even charged with a crime, let alone was she not convicted of a crime, but if she defies the judge she will be criminally charged for contempt I suppose. Beinvenidos a los Estados Unidos.]

An Orange County judge handed down an unusual sentence for a woman accused of yelling anti-Semitic comments at her Jewish neighbor.

Geraldine Ballard wasn't charged with a crime. What happened in court Thursday will not show up on her record unless she violates the conditions of her probation.

Orange County judge Mike Murphy handled the sensitive case by drafting a creative sentence for Ballard. Ballard is accused of threatening Lisa Green and her children by shouting derogatory remarks at them as they walked in front of her property on their way to the Jewish Community Center in Maitland.

"I truly have to say, the system worked, it really worked," said Green.

The judge sentenced Ballard to 180 days of probation with the condition she either serve 50 hours of community service or visit one of three holocaust museums in Washington DC, St. Petersburg or the Jewish Community Center located in her own neighborhood.

Ballard has denied the accusations against her all along and Thursday she refused to talk about the conditions of her probation.

Ballard must also undergo a mental health evaluation. If she fails to comply, she'll be back in court where she could be criminally charged.

Ballard will have to pay $250 in court costs and she cannot have any contact with Green and her family.

The government deliberately overtaxes us for 12 months. Then it mails us a check, without interest, for the overcharge. Voters rejoice. "It’s free money from the government!"

The government overtaxes us for these reasons:

1. The politicians like interest-free money.
2. The lure of a rebate persuades everyone to file a tax return, thereby identifying his whereabouts.
3. We are all emotional Christmas clubbers: "Free money from the government!"

A good sting operator understands the larceny in the hearts of his victims. That’s what the great Paul Newman-Robert Redford movie was all about. It’s what George C. Scott’s delightful movie was all about: The Flim-Flam Man. Scott’s character, Mordecai Jones, taught his apprentice, "You can’t cheat an honest man." Then he cheated everyone in sight.

And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine prevailed over them: so the land became Pharaoh’s. And as for the people, he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt even to the other end thereof. Only the land of the priests bought he not; for the priests had a portion assigned them of Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them: wherefore they sold not their lands.

Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land. And it shall come to pass in the increase, that ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.

And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants. And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part; except the land of the priests only, which became not Pharaoh’s (Genesis 47:18–26)

"Although the period of global rebalancing would be painful for U.S. consumers and workers, it would be even harder on the European and Japanese economies, with their propensity for deflation and stagnation. Such a transitory adjustment would be unpleasant, but it would not undermine the economic foundations of U.S. hegemony."

Translation: screw the workers and consumers. U.S. "hegemony" is more important than their selfish desire to work for a living. One million people facing immigration proceedings have been released into the general population, the government's chief of detention and removal told the Senate yesterday , prompting some Republicans to say the Bush administration is "not serious" about the problem.

"We have a million individuals who are in some phase of immigration proceedings released," said Victor X. Cerda, the acting director of detention and removal operations for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

He said of those people, 465,000 are fugitive aliens who have been ordered deported. About 80,000 of those are criminal aliens who have committed an offense in addition to immigration violations, but he couldn't provide an exact number.

His comments came as an immigration debate in the Senate blocked most progress on the emergency war-spending bill. Pending amendments include cracking down on illegal immigrants' use of driver's licenses, increasing visas for seasonal nonimmigrant workers and legalizing up to 1 million illegal aliens who work in agriculture and their families.

[Now this is a true statement about other countries. But the question people in other countries have to be asking themselves is “Why loan our money to America to buy our stuff when we could loan our money to our own people and have them buy our stuff?”]

The Bush administration can get away with this, of course, because our credit is still good – the Chinese, Japanese, and Europeans are only too happy to lend us money to buy their products. So it was more than a little curious, last week, when the president of the United States stood outside the Bureau of Public Debt in Parkersburg, W.Va. and implied that the more than $1.7 trillion in U.S. Treasury notes that make up the Social Security trust fund aren’t really worth the paper they are printed on.

Narco News: In your report you bring up evidence of serious human rights abuses committed or supported by the MINUSTAH. How was the evidence collected?

James Cavallaro: The main allegation in terms of violent abuses is that the MINUSTAH troops have provided cover and logistical support to the Haitian national police for committing gross violations. Executions, mass arrests of twenty, forty, eighty people without warrant, and (the national police) have been able to do that because they could count on the support of the UN troops! That is the thrust of our critique in terms of human rights violations. Also, there are some cases in which our information demonstrates at least the serious possibility of the direct involvement in gross violations. We bring up two concrete cases.

After being at Columbia for a while it occurred to me that international organisations and the UN, on the one hand and Columbia and New York, on the other, functioned in parallel universes. At international fora and assemblies, which I followed for my studies, Israeli repression was condemned, and countless resolutions requesting Israel to abide by international law were blocked by the US. At Columbia, arguments were concocted to defend Israel. I have been to many universities in many different countries and I have to say that, by far, I have never attended a more closed-minded campus than Columbia. And I am not saying this merely on account of the density of Israeli army T-shirts that can be regularly observed there.
