Fat paychecks

A low-fat diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans has twice the cholesterol-lowering power of a conventional low-fat diet -- even when the two diets have the same amount of calories and fat, researchers said on Monday.

It seems like an idyllic pastoral scene; thousands of white ducks and fuzzy yellow ducklings, splashing peacefully in the water ponds of a farm in the Vietnamese countryside.

But behind this picturesque image lurks an ominous threat. Three months ago, Vietnam announced a strict ban on the raising of ducks, which are believed to be the primary reservoir of the bird-flu virus. Yet all of the 8,200 ducks on this farm were born after the ban.

[I don’t get what the big to-do is over the possibility of life on Mars. Who cares? I think they should be working on ways to get us to be able to go live on mars. If we can figure out how to live on other planets then the answer to “is there life on this or that planet?” will always be, “not yet, but soon.”]

Not so long ago it was unthinkable for respectable scientists to talk about life on Mars. Such talk was best left to X-Files fans. But no longer.

Evidence is building to suggest biological processes might be operating on the red planet, and life on Mars, many scientists believe, is now more a likelihood than merely a possibility.

[The distinguishing features rthern Aliiance v the Taliban wasn’t that the Northern Alliance was progressive and rights friendly, while the Taliban wasn’t. The big difference was the Taliban was minimally competent at running the country, and the Northern Alliance wasn’t.]

Authorities have found the bodies of three Afghan women, one of whom worked for an aid group, who were raped, strangled and dumped with a warning for women not to work for such groups, an official said on Monday.

Aid workers in Afghanistan have been the target of Taliban insurgents, especially in the insurgency-plagued south and east of the country, but the three women were found in the northern province of Baghlan, where Taliban rebels are not active.

H5N1 evolves via recombination. The H5N1 in Hong Kong in 1997 had 8 avian genes. The H5N1 in 2003 in Hong Kong had 8 avian genes. The H5N1 in Vietnam and Thailand in 2004 had 8 avian genes. The H5N1 in 2005 in Vietnam and Cambodia had 8 avian genes. The H5N1 in northern Vietnam in 2005 had 8 avian genes. H5N1 has been evolving, expanding its host range, and changing its lethality with 8 avian genes. No human genes. No swine genes. No reassortment.

The old mutation story to explain rapid change is also nonsense. The H5N1 has been gradually changing, but it has done so by shuffling polymorphisms via recombination. New polymorphisms are due to mutation, but H5N1 doesn't use new mutations for rapid change, it recombines to acquire old polymorphisms.

It was the first of many conversations the 44-year-old patient had with his wife, four sons and other family and friends during a 14-hour stretch, Herbert's uncle, Simon Manka said.

``How long have I been away?'' Herbert asked.

[Remember that big push by the nuclear power industry to build more plants? This is part of the same operation.]

The U.S. military is considering allowing regional combatant commanders to request presidential approval for pre-emptive nuclear strikes against possible attacks with weapons of mass destruction on the United States or its allies, according to a draft nuclear operations paper.

The specific tests and the order of testing, which the CDC suggests, results in vast underdiagnosis. Is this the goal? Could it be possible that the CDC is intricately meshed with the pharmaceutical companies? Is a treatable epidemic being covered up for the purpose of financial gain? When a patient is handed a negative diagnosis for Lyme Disease they proceed to visit specialist after specialist seeking a diagnosis. This results in multiple isolated diagnoses, such as irritable bowel syndrome, carpal tunnel, migraine headaches, fatigue, depression, ADD, eye problems, heart problems, foot and leg pain, etc. Lyme Disease can present with 40 or more symptoms throughout the body.

[Seems to me, when you refine something, it usually gets smaller.]

Honeywell's initial estimate of a release of 7 pounds of UF6
was later refined to be approximately 70 pounds.

But more than 3 1/2 years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the U.S. government has failed to adequately prepare first responders and the public for a nuclear strike, according to emergency preparedness and nuclear experts and federal reports.

Although hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved by rapidly evacuating people downwind of a radiation cloud, officials have trained only small numbers of first responders to prepare for such an event, according to public health specialists and government documents. And the information given to the public is flawed and incomplete, many experts agree.

Laura's well-written script included several shots of risqué material. After revealing that come nine o'clock at night, "Mr. Excitement is sound asleep, and I'm watching Desperate Housewives," she added, "If those women think they're desperate, they ought to be with George." She then joked that she, Lynne Cheney, and Condoleezza Rice had hit Chippendale's late one night. And moments later--after referring to Barbara Bush as Don Corleone and joking about her husband's aversion to reading--she made fun of her number-one cowboy for knowing little of the ways of ranch life when they bought the spread in Crawford, Texas. Such a greenhorn was George, she explained, "he tried to milk the horse. What's more--it was a male horse."

It was a good performance but weird, for Laura had jabbed at her husband for not reading books, had suggested he was no powerhouse in bed, and had encouraged everyone in the room--and all those children at home glued to C-SPAN--to envision George W. Bush pulling on the penis of a horse. (I wondered how social conservative leader James Dobson, who was scheduled to be at the dinner, reacted.) It was not hard to figure out why the White House decided to have Laura upstage George. Her approval rating is almost twice his, and his number--in the mid-40s--are at a record low. But an HBO routine? Afterward, both Al Franken and Bill Maher were complaining that they could not have gotten away with that horse joke.

Don't you think the press might have been sensitive to the hypocrisy of a president who teaches "absolute" moral values and denounces the allegedly low moral standards of television having his wife employ the same kind of humor? No, not this crowd of D.C. mainstream press insiders. They are so cynical and complacent with their fat paychecks that they just consider the whole presidency a performance.
