Test fired

Q: Might there be something wrong with protocols that render the president
unnecessary when the alarm is going off at his house?

McCLELLAN: That's not at all what occurred, Ken. And I would disagree strongly
with the way you characterize it for the reasons I started earlier, and that I
talked about. This was a situation where the president was in an off-site
location. He was not in danger, a situation where protocols have been put in
place to address the situation. The protocols were followed. ...

On the day after more than 30,000 people -- including the vice president, the
first lady, and a former first lady -- were evacuated from their offices or
homes in Washington, D.C., but the president, who was biking in Maryland was not
notified until the threat passed, reporters grilled Press Secretary Scott
McClellan at his daily briefing.

For those who might have missed it on TV -- that is, nearly everyone -- here are
some choice excerpts, as McClellan continually refers to "protocols"
and reporters essentially ask, "Wouldn't most men like to know when their
home is evacuated and their wife is hustled to a secure bunker?" They also
wonder about the small matter of the president being commander in chief and the
capital, theoretically, coming under attack.

The partially treated sewage would flow directly into lakes, rivers and streams -- carrying with it deadly parasites, viruses and bacteria, including dysentery, cholera, e coli, hepatitis, and gastroenteritis.

The Center for Disease Control reports that each year the health of 8 million people is adversely affected by water contaminated with sewage waste, and 900 people die each year from illnesses related to exposure. [3]

Under the proposed rules, exposure levels will increase if blending becomes regular practice. Dr. Joan Rose, a Michigan State University professor, explained that there is a 50% chance of getting sick from swimming in an area adjacent to a sewage output point where only the first and third stage of treatment are used, whereas the risk is less than .1% from swimming in an area where second stage treatment and disinfection is used. With regard to the news made known in yesterday's issue of LA OPINION, involving a dead heifer found in the Colonia Margarita region, reminiscent of the cattle mutilations that claimed hundreds of animals two years ago, a local veterinarian dismissed the event. In his own words, "there is nothing abnormal about these deaths, nor in the incisions that represent a perfect surgery performed with a scalpel."

Scotland Yard today revealed it has been unable to trace all but two of 300 black boys aged four to seven reported missing from school in a three-month period.

Child welfare experts say the number highlights the scale of the trade in children brought to Britain as domestic servants and covers for benefit fraud.

Russia's security chief accused U.S. and other foreign intelligence services Thursday of using non-governmental organizations that promote democracy to spy on Russia and bring about political upheaval in former Soviet republics.

The remarks by an ally of President Vladimir Putin reflect concern in the Kremlin over its waning regional clout following the ascent of pro-Western governments on its borders.

``Along with classic forms of influence on political and economic processes, foreign intelligence agencies are ever more actively using non-traditional methods,'' including working through ``various non-governmental organizations,'' Federal Security Service chief Nikolai Patrushev told lawmakers.

``Under cover of implementing humanitarian and educational programs in Russian regions, they lobby the interests of the states in question and gather classified information on a broad spectrum of issues,'' he said.

A new study of American television coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict released at a Capitol Hill public forum sponsored by the Council for the National Interest on Monday, May 9th, revealed a lopsided bias in favor of Israel.

The new study analyzed two years of coverage on ABC, CBS, and NBC evening news programs, as well as general coverage provided by the Associated Press. Using the figures of 28 Israeli children and 131 Palestinian children who died in the course of the first year of the intifada (September 2000-September 2001), Weir showed that the major American media over-reported Israeli deaths and substantially under-reported Palestinian deaths. ABC's World News Tonight, for example, reported the death of Israeli children 14 times more often than Palestinian children. In this way, the public, Ms. Weir said, was given the impression that many more Israeli children died during the first year of the Palestinian uprising than Palestinian, when the numbers showed that four and half times as many Palestinian children died of gunshot wounds or in the line of fire than Israeli children died in gunfights or suicide bombings.

Nor was the coverage atypical. Reviewing the figures for 2004, Weir found that 8 Israeli children and 179 Palestinian children died during that year. The media (ABC, NBC, CBS) reported 83% of Israeli children's deaths and 8% of Palestinian children's deaths. That is, an Israeli death was 9.9 times more likely to be reported than a Palestinian death.

The study is a follow-up to a similar report released two weeks ago on The New York Times, which found the Times reported Israeli deaths at rates up to seven to ten times greater than Palestinian fatalities.

They have been in jail for a year now. There is absolutely no proof that they really were mercenaries. There has been talk that once released back to South Africa they might be prosecuted over here, too. I still think this could be an intelligence trick. We should never forget the possibility that there was high-level conniving behind the scenes and that this was planned.

Don't be surprised to find that South Africa itself is behind this one. Why? Because South African Intelligence "alerted" Zimbabwe of a planeload of "mercenaries" leaving the country. If they knew about the mercenaries - why then didn't they stop the plane from taking off? The whole thing smells.

[Are they really this stupid? Could they really be shocked? Yes, it could really happen. That is how bad of shape we are in.]

A group of 89 Democratic congressmen have written to Mr Bush expressing their shock at the revelations - which have not been disputed by the Government in London - saying that the documents raised "troubling new questions" over the legal justification for the invasion, and regarding "the integrity of our administration". The letter, which has thus far elicited no response from the White House, notes that if they are correct, the documents suggest that not only was the decision to go to war taken months before Mr Bush sought congressional authorisation for war in October 2002, they would also bear out charges that the administration manipulated intelligence to back up its case, and that US diplomatic moves before the conflict were little more than a charade.

Just look at this from ABC News's "The Note" today:

"Brides gotta run, planes gotta stray, and cable news networks gotta find a way to fill a lot of programming hours as cheaply as possible...We say with all the genuine apolitical and non-partisan human concern that we can muster that the death and carnage in Iraq is truly staggering. And/but we are sort of resigned to the Notion that it simply isn't going to break through to American news organizations, or, for the most part, Americans...What is hands down the biggest story every day in the world will get almost no coverage."

Let me reiterate how unbelievable this actually is: A MAJOR AMERICAN MEDIA OUTLET HAS NOW DECLARED THAT THEY SIMPLY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN LETTING THE CARNAGE IN IRAQ "BREAK THROUGH" IN THEIR NEWS COVERAGE - AS IF IT IS SIMPLY NOT NEWSWORTHY. You can just imagine the pathetic newsroom attitude: we don't cover cats getting stuck in trees, we don't birthday parties at the local McDonalds, and we don't cover America's multi-billion dollar war in the Mideast.

Sorry America, the insulated, out-of-touch, Washington media is simply uninterested in providing any real coverage about the war. Because remember, the media has to be "very deferential" because "no one want[s] to get into an argument with the president at this very serious time.

Dear Mr. Attorney General:

We are writing to request that you appoint a special counsel to investigate whether high-ranking officials within the Bush Administration violated the War Crimes Act, 18 U.S.C. 2441, or the Anti-Torture Act, 18 U.S.C. 2340 by allowing the use of torture techniques banned by domestic and international law at recognized and secret detention sites in Iraq, Afghanistan Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere.

Sunlight reaching the Earth surface is the primary energy source for life on
our planet and a key element of climate change.

Several studies showed that sunlight at the Earth surface has been reduced
significantly since the 1960s when worldwide measurements of this quantity
started ("global dimming").

These studies were based on observations stored in two databases located at ETH
Zurich, which compile the worldwide measurements of sunlight at the surface.

New studies carried out at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science ETH
show, that the dimming of sunlight faded in the mid 1980s and did not continue
during the 1990s. Rather, a widespread tendency towards brightening has been
noted.

However, the most shocking moment was eight minutes into the show when one of the hosts said that Kurt Waldheim's involvement in killing American troops in world war two was 'a riot' and that he found it funny.

The exact transcript is as follows...

-------------------------

Alex Jones: You know, Adolf Hitler was Time Magazine's man of the year in 1933. So a lot of sickos back then thought Adolf Hitler was OK.

Host: So you really believe Schwarzenegger's another Hitler?

Alex Jones: I don't know, he dreamed of being a dictator and ran campaigns for Kurt Waldheim. A guy that hunted down and killed American soldiers.

Hosts: (Laughter)

Alex Jones: It's funny, isn't it? Killing American soldiers is funny?

Host: Oh yeah it's a riot, it's the funniest thing I ever heard of.

Alex Jones: Real funny.

Host: Yeah.

APPEALS COURT REJECTS SIBEL EDMONDS CASE

The DC District Court of Appeals has rejected an appeal by FBI
whistleblower Sibel Edmonds, whose case had been dismissed after
the government invoked the state secrets privilege.

The Appeals Court ruling, issued on Friday without explanation or
commentary, seems to mark an expansion of the state secrets
privilege or at least a refusal by the Court to inquire deeply
into the grounds for its application. See:

http://www.fas.org/sgp/jud/se-ddca050605.pdf

The Justice Department elaborated on its view that "this case
cannot be litigated except by reference to privileged
information" in an April 22 letter to the Court:

When the US plane reached a point about 193 km from the coast of North Korea, two MiG-29 and two MiG-21 fighter planes showed up unexpectedly. The North Korean planes approached within 16 m and signaled the US plane to follow them. The US pilot refused to follow the command and left the scene posthaste. The US plane was tailed by the hostiles for about 22 min but let the US spy plane go. There are two key points to be observed here.

First, the hostile planes waited for the US plane at the Uhrang airbase, located about 200 km from the point of air encounter. They knew that the US plane was coming. The North Korean planes flew 200 km to intercept the US plane. Did the US plane see them coming? If it did, why no evasive action? After intercepting the US plane, the hostile planes dogged it for 22 min. Why no American planes for the rescue? The US crew must have informed the base of the danger they were in, but no action was taken by the base. If Kim Jong Il had given the command, the MiGs would have shot down the US plane and returned to their base before the US could have scrambled war planes.

Second, North Korea intercepted an American spy plane flying 200 km from its coast. According to the international norm, a nation's territorial air space extends 19 km from its coast line. The US is the exception and claims air space of 370 km from its coast line; any foreign airplane violating this extended air space is challenged or shot down by the US military.

The main enemy of the North Korean navy will be US carrier task forces. The Russian navy has developed a tactic to deal with US carriers task forces: massive simultaneous missile attacks. In addition, Russia has developed the anti-carrier missile, "jun-gal", that can destroy a carrier. China has developed similar tactics for destroying US carriers. On April 1, 2003, North Korea test-fired a high-speed ground-to-ship missile of 60km range. A US carrier task force of Nimitz class has 6,000 men, 70 planes, and a price tag of 4.5 billion dollars. Destroying even a single career task force will be traumatic.
