In Teheran, the Foreign Ministry spokesman expressed surprise

A group of Turkish female activists confronted Undersecretary of State Karen Hughes on Wednesday with emotional and heated complaints about the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, turning a session designed to highlight the empowerment of women into a raw display of anger at U.S. policy in the region.

"This war is really, really bringing your positive efforts to the level of zero," said Hidayet Sefkatli Tuksal, an activist with the Capital City Women's Forum. She said it was difficult to talk about cooperation between women in the United States and Turkey as long as Iraq was under occupation.

Hughes, a longtime confidante of President Bush, has the job of burnishing the U.S. image overseas and has generally met with polite audiences -- many of which consisted of former exchange students or people who have received U.S. funding -- during a tour of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey this week.

The leader of the campaign to abolish the council tax, which has resulted in two elderly members being jailed for non-payment, said yesterday that "dozens" more pensioners were willing to go to prison for the cause.

In a warning to Tony Blair, Christine Melsom, 64, said the IsItFair? campaign was attracting new members by the hour and would continue to fight until the tax was replaced with a fairer system linked to ability to pay.

Christine Melsom: 'There is a lot of anger out there'

She said that Alfred Ridley, a 71-year-old retired vicar, and Sylvia Hardy, 73, a former social worker, would not be the last to be jailed and issued a warning that the grey vote revolt could cost Labour dear.

"In the end something will have to give," she said. "We cannot have jails full of elderly people. But we will fight until this tax is scrapped. We could have another poll tax situation on our hands.

"This is not just a pensioner issue; it affects everyone and anyone who thinks we are just a load of placard-waving pensioners should bear in mind that they may suffer next."

A federal judge in Brooklyn ruled yesterday that former Attorney General John Ashcroft, the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other top government officials will have to answer questions under oath in a lawsuit that accuses them of personally conspiring to violate the rights of Muslim immigrants held in a federal detention center in Brooklyn after 9/11.

The officials had sought to have the lawsuit dismissed without testimony, arguing in part that they had governmental immunity from its claims, that the court lacked jurisdiction because they live outside New York State, and that the Sept. 11 attacks created "special factors" outweighing the plaintiffs' right to sue for damages for constitutional violations.

But the judge, John Gleeson, of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, rejected those arguments, allowing the case to proceed - and opening the door to depositions of Mr. Ashcroft and the F.B.I. director, Robert S. Mueller III, by lawyers for the two plaintiffs: Ehab Elmaghraby, an Egyptian immigrant who ran a restaurant in Times Square, and Javaid Iqbal, a Pakistani immigrant whose Long Island customers knew him as "the cable guy."

Rising carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is threatening to make oceans too corrosive for marine organisms to grow protective shells, according to researchers.

If emissions continue unabated, the entire Southern Ocean, which stretches north from the Antarctic coastline, and subarctic regions of the Pacific Ocean will soon become so acidic that the shells of marine creatures will soften and dissolve making them easy targets for predators. Others will not be able to grow sufficient shells to survive.

The loss of shelled creatures at the lower end of the food chain could have disastrous consequences for larger marine animals. North pacific salmon, mackerel, herring, cod and baleen whales all feed on pteropods or sea butterflies, one of the species under imminent threat.
"These are extremely important in the food chain and what happens if they start to disappear is a great unknown," said Jim Orr, lead scientist on the study at the Laboratory for Science of the Climate and Environment in Gif-sur-Yvette, near Paris.

Previous studies have suggested it would take centuries for emissions to acidify the oceans to such an extent, but the latest report, published today in the journal Nature, claims entire ecosystems will be threatened much sooner. "Within decades, there may be serious trouble brewing in these polar oceans," said Dr Orr. "Unlike climate predictions, the uncertainties here are small."

It's total fraud

The widely-held theory is that HIV originated in African primates in the African bush. Somehow the monkey or chimpanzee virus "jumped species" into black Africans to initiate the epidemic which has now killed 20 million people and infected 40 million more. How this sexually-transmitted virus came from black Africa to initially infect only young white gay men in Manhattan has never been explained satisfactorily. Furthermore, the epidemic in America erupted in the late 1970s, at a time when AIDS in Africa was unknown. The AIDS epidemic in Africa appeared in the autumn of 1982, at the earliest.

In his book "The Conspirator's Hierarchy," Dr. John Coleman named Chomsky as a deep cover CIA agent working to undermine social protest groups. Certainly Dr. Coleman's claims appear validated by an honest review of Chomsky's role as a Left gatekeeper.

Since 9-11, he has steadfastly refused to discuss the evidence of government complicity and prior knowledge. Furthermore, he claims that the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), Bilderberg Committee, and Trilateral Commission are "nothing organizations." When critiquing poverty, he never mentions the Federal Reserve and their role in manipulating the cycle of debt.

Similarly, he claims the CIA was never a rogue organization and is an innocent scapegoat; that JFK was killed by the lone assassin Lee Harvey Oswald; that the obvious vote fraud in 2004 did not occur; and that peak oil is real and good for humanity.

What he does advocate is population control, gun control, support for U.N.E.S.C.O., and the end of national sovereignty in favor of a one-world government under the UN. In other words, the major goals of the New World Order.

Where do American religious leaders stand on torture? Their deafening silence evokes memories of the unconscionable behavior of German church leaders in the 1930s and early 1940s.

Despite the hate whipped up by administration propagandists against those it brands "terrorists," most Americans agree that torture should not be permitted. Few seem aware, though, that although President George W. Bush says he is against torture, he has openly declared that our military and other interrogators may engage in torture "consistent with military necessity."

For far too long, we have been acting like "obedient Germans." Shall we continue to avert our eyes – even as our mainstream media begin to expose the "routine" torture conducted by U.S. forces in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo?

In high school I had grown accustomed to math classes that featured clear, helpful instruction from teachers who liked to teach and excelled at teaching. At Smartypants U, the jewel in the crown of American academia, my math instructor was a twenty-something teaching assistant whose classroom style never deviated from the following pattern:

1)       Greet class.

2)       Ask if there were any questions about the previous evening's problem set.

3)       If so, work out the problem in question on the chalkboard, without further explanation.

4)       Repeat step 3) as needed.

5)       Announce the pages in the textbook from which the next problem set would be derived.

6)       Perform a sample problem from the new problem set.

7)       Ask if anyone has any questions.

8)       Give the problem set assignment.

9)       Dismiss the class.

The molecule – 9,10-dithioanthracene or “DTA” – has two linkers that act as feet. Obtaining its energy from heat supplied to it, the molecule moves such that only one of the linkers is lifted from the surface; the remaining linker guides the motion of the molecule and keeps it on course. Alternating the motions of its two “feet,” DTA is able to walk in a straight line without the assistance of nano-rails or nano-grooves for guidance.

Nearly four days after Hurricane Rita hit, many of the storm's sweltering victims along the Texas Gulf Coast were still waiting for electricity, gasoline, water and other relief Tuesday, prompting one top emergency official to complain that people are "living like cavemen."

In the hard-hit refinery towns of Port Arthur and Beaumont, crews struggled to cross debris-clogged streets to deliver generators and water to people stranded by Rita. They predicted it could be a month before power is restored, and said water and sewer systems could not function until more generators arrived.

Red tape was also blamed for the delays.

Port Arthur Mayor Oscar Ortiz, whose own home was destroyed by fire after the hurricane, said "we've had 101 promises" for aid, "but it's all bureaucracy." He and other officials gathered at a hotel-turned- command center, where a dirty American flag found among hurricane debris was hung on the wall.

Hit by rising gasoline prices, a record percentage of credit-card accounts were delinquent in the second quarter, the American Bankers Association reported Wednesday.

The ABA found that the 4.81 percent of credit-card accounts had payments that were past due by 30 days or more between April and June. That's up from 4.76 percent in the first quarter, which was the previous record. The ABA started tracking delinquencies in 1973.

The ABA also noted an increase in delinquent payments on personal loans, auto loans, home equity loans and lines of credit.

A key reason for the increase: the strain of higher gas prices.

The plants were sunflowers

It may be the oddest tale to emerge from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Armed dolphins, trained by the US military to shoot terrorists and pinpoint spies underwater, may be missing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Experts who have studied the US navy's cetacean training exercises claim the 36 mammals could be carrying 'toxic dart' guns. Divers and surfers risk attack, they claim, from a species considered to be among the planet's smartest. The US navy admits it has been training dolphins for military purposes, but has refused to confirm that any are missing.

Dolphins have been trained in attack-and-kill missions since the Cold War. The US Atlantic bottlenose dolphins have apparently been taught to shoot terrorists attacking military vessels. Their coastal compound was breached during the storm, sweeping them out to sea. But those who have studied the controversial use of dolphins in the US defence programme claim it is vital they are caught quickly.

There is one forum open to those who don't trade. For access to the rest, one must post original amateur nudity or porn, or graphic pics of wartime gore. It's all presented as entertainment, all of it lurid, and all of it, whether painful or pleasurable, profoundly intimate.

It might be best not to speculate about why there is such interest among the troops to document and to leer at images of intense feeling. The graphic details of sex, and of traumatic amputation, are not matters that healthy minds share with the wider world. Surely there is some pathology at work here.

And surely, the website will confirm the worst fears of more conservative, religious Iraqis about just what the Americans are bringing to their country.

been the trigger for AOL's e-mail blocking.

Bel Aire officials probably will never look at sunflowers the same way again.

On Friday, Bel Aire Mayor Brian Withrow hired a consultant to look into a case in which police searched the home of a former four-term mayor looking for marijuana.

Police had seen plants in the backyard of Harold and Carolyn Smith's home and thought them to be pot. They took pictures.

They showed the pictures to an assistant district attorney. He also thought the plants were marijuana. So did the Sedgwick County district court judge who signed a search warrant.

When police went to the Smith house on Sept. 6 and examined the plants more closely, they realized their mistake.

The plants were sunflowers -- Maximilian sunflowers, specifically, grown from seeds the Smiths' son, a wildlife biologist, had given them

Members of Scientology are induced to confess to acts that, if not outright criminal, are embarrassing or possibly destructive to the person's job, marriage or profession, for example, shoplifting, adultery, masturbation, or drug abuse. The member is urged to write these down in their own handwriting, under the guise that it is a "religious confessional" for the member's good. The truth is that these "confessions" are kept to blackmail and extort the member should they dare to speak out. The member is also coerced to sign documents that are self-damaging while protecting the organization, solely in case the member dares to leave their control and speak the truth. I know because I watched this done to others, I did it to others and it was done to me.

In late 1991, my wife Monika became pregnant and although we were elated, she was ordered to abort the child. The reason for the abortion order is that Sea Org members were not allowed to have children. The order devastated both my wife and me. Our dedication as Sea Org members clashed violently with our intentions as parents and we went through a personal nightmare with me opposing it, to no avail. She got the abortion and afterwards she was not the same. She was devastated at the impact of what she did and that was when she told me she wanted to leave. We fled, with the organization close behind us, trying to find us. They finally did and convinced us to return so we could "leave properly."

He was by this time an old man with one foot in the grave, so utterly
ignorant of letters, that one may say that he did not know the
alphabet--a thing which had never happened before amongst the Romans.
It had been customary for the Emperor to sign the decrees which were
issued by him with his own hand, whereas he neither made decrees, nor
was capable of conducting affairs; but Proclus, who acted as his
quaestor and colleague, arranged everything at his own pleasure.
However, in order that the Emperor's signature might appear in public
documents, his officers invented the following device. They had the
shapes of four Latin letters cut in a thin piece of wood, and then,
having dipped the pen in the imperial ink used by the Emperors in
writing, they put it in the Emperor's hand, and laying the piece of
wood on the paper to be signed, they guided the Emperor's hand and pen
round the outline of the four letters, making it follow all the
convolutions cut in the wood, and then retired with the result as the
Emperor's signature. This was how the affairs of the Empire were
managed under Justin. His wife was named Lupicina; she was a slave and
a barbarian, whom he had bought for his mistress, and at the close of
his life she ascended the throne with him. Justin was not strong
enough to do his subjects either good or harm; he was utterly simple,
a very poor speaker, and a complete boor.

If you want to see the true face of war, go to the amateur porn Web site NowThatsFuckedUp.com. For almost a year, American soldiers stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan have been taking photographs of dead bodies, many of them horribly mutilated or blown to pieces, and sending them to Web site administrator Chris Wilson. In return for letting him post these images, Wilson gives the soldiers free access to his site. American soldiers have been using the pictures of disfigured Iraqi corpses as currency to buy pornography.

The new law ''may lead to the reckless use of guns on the streets of Florida cities,'' the one-page flier reads. The ads will warn that after Oct. 1, visitors ''face a greater risk of bodily harm in Florida,'' said Peter Hamm, spokesman for the Washington-based advocacy group.

The fliers urge tourists to take precautions, such as: ''Do not argue unnecessarily with local people,'' and ''keep your hands in plain sight'' if you are involved in a traffic accident or a near-miss.

THE LAW

Under the law, which was passed at the urging of the National Rifle Association, Floridians may use deadly force against an attacker, even if they could have fled, and requires prosecutors to presume that they acted in self-defense.

''We are not trying to scare people, the Florida Legislature scared people,'' Hamm said.

The US and the Iraqi government have overstated the number of foreign fighters in Iraq, "feeding the myth" that they are the backbone of the insurgency, an American thinktank says in a new report.

Foreign militants - mainly from Algeria, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia - account for less than 10% of the estimated 30,000 insurgents, according to the Washington-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)

The United States District Court for the Eastern District in Louisiana today sided with the National Rifle Association (NRA) and issued a restraining order to bar further gun confiscations from peaceable and law-abiding victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

"This is a significant victory for freedom and for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The court's ruling is instant relief for the victims who now have an effective means of defending themselves from the robbers and rapists that seek to further exploit the remnants of their shattered lives," said NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre.

A new, highly contagious and sometimes deadly canine flu is spreading in kennels and at dog tracks around the country, veterinarians said yesterday. The virus, which scientists say mutated from an influenza strain that affects horses, has killed racing greyhounds in 7 states and has been found in shelters and pet shops in many places, including the New York suburbs, though the extent of its spread is unknown. How many dogs die from the virus is unclear, but scientists said the fatality rate is more than 1 per cent and could be as high as 10 per cent among puppies and older dogs.

New Orleans- The badly mangled bodies of three FEMA workers were discovered two days ago, hanging from a tree inside the courtyard of a French Quarter apartment. The bodies, found by U.S. Military Police units engaged in searching for survivors, bore crudely written placards that read, “FEMA THIEF-DIE,” “RACIST PIG,” and “FEMA LOOTER BITCH.”

The bodies were, in the words of an Army officer, “shockingly mutilated’ and one of the victims had their tongue torn out while another had both hands cut off.

They were identified by plastic name tags as: Martine Smallworth, 38, of Clearwater, Florida, LeRoy Dufarge, 45, also of Clearwater, and Janu Radzek, 29, from Coral Gables, Florida.

Found with the badly decomposing and mutilated bodies were expensive leather luggage, apparently looted from Saks Fifth Avenue’s New Orleans store and containing very expensive women’s clothing, jewelry, several boxes of Davidoff cigars, three Rolex watches and nearly $3 thousand in small bills.

A so-called manifesto was also found, tied to the feet of one of the victims that called for violence against President Bush and the former head of FEMA, Brown.

Because of what was termed its “inflammatory nature” of this document, its contents were not released .

Apartment house residents claimed that they had “heard and seen nothing” although it appeared that the three had been killed where they were found.

There are growing rumors in military and civilian circles here that FEMA personnel have been involved in shipping large amounts of emergency food rations, allegedly for resale, out of the area in official trucks at the height of the recovery efforts.

Shaha Ali Riza, lately in the news as World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz's Saudi-born girlfriend, has been assigned to the U.S. State Department. The move, which has not been announced by either huge agency controlled by the Bush regime, means that she'll be working with Dick Cheney's daughter Liz Cheney, a top official in the key Near East Affairs bureau.

That's the word from one of my moles in the World Bank. This significant assignment — a hardened link between the money of the World Bank, which is supposed to focus on poverty, and the neocons' aims of trying to salvage their privatization plans for Iraq — has not be reported anywhere else, to my knowledge, and I see no word of it on the World Bank website either.

Britain's top police officer was accused last night of paving the way for "Judge Dredd law" by proposing that officers should be allowed to by-pass the courts and confiscate driving licences, seize vehicles and issue anti-social behaviour orders on the spot.

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said "modernisation" of the force should be carried forward by introducing "an escalator of powers" for the dispensing of instant justice.

"One idea is to have some police officers - paid more and with more powers - to impose an interim anti-social behaviour order, for instance, or suspend a driving licence," he said. This would have an immediate effect rather than waiting for intervention by the courts, Sir Ian suggested.

Apart from giving us details as to the present US-style military/police state in which Haitians are living today (under the auspices of a "western"-backed dictator) and apart from the figures he gave us as to the number of assassinations at the hands of the present pseudo-government, he spoke of the reasons why Aristides was kidnapped and forced out of power.

He also spoke of some elements which I will not discuss here ... for such elements will become evident in the near to mid future and need to be kept secret in order for the upcoming rebellion in Haiti to be successful.

According to the taxi driver, the main reason why Aristides was forced out of power was because Aristides had taken the first steps toward what might have eventually led to a mass world uprising against all colonialists: the British, the French, the "Americans," the Portuguese, the Spaniards, the Dutch, the Belgians, etc. What Aristides had apparently begun would have led to a mass uprising against those countries which had invaded foreign lands, assassinated Natives, forced Blacks into slavery and which had stolen land and resources from the Natives.

The draft Mental Health Bill proposes allowing patients to be made to take medication and detained if necessary. The King's Fund study said that in 15 years as many as 13,000 could be placed under such orders, rather than the Government's 1450 figure. But the outrage apparently doesn't end with spoiled food. Former KBR employees and water quality specialists, Ben Carter and Ken May, told HalliburtonWatch that KBR knowingly exposes troops and civilians to contaminated water from Iraq's Euphrates River. One internal KBR email provided to HalliburtonWatch says that, for "possibly a year," the level of contamination at one camp was two times the normal level for untreated water.

"I discovered the water being delivered from the Euphrates for the military was not being treated properly and thousands were being exposed daily to numerous pathogenic organisms," Carter informed HalliburtonWatch.

Carter worked at Camp Ar Ramadi, located 70 miles west of Baghdad in the notoriously violent Sunni Triangle, but he says water contamination problems exist throughout Iraq's military camps. He helped manage KBR's Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit (ROWPU), which is a water treatment system designed to produce potable (drinkable) water from a variety of raw water sources such as lakes, lagoons and rivers. ROWPU is supposed to provide the troops with clean water from Iraq's Euphrates River.

Two national environmental organizations, Environmental Working Group and Beyond Pesticides, joined today with the Fluoride Action Network in challenging the safety of new food tolerances issued by the EPA for the fluoride based pesticide, sulfuryl fluoride. This action marks growing concern among mainstream scientists and environmental organizations that total exposure to fluoride, from water, food, and dental uses like toothpaste and rinses, is not safe for vulnerable populations, particularly young children.

The challenge was directed at the maximum legal limits for the fluoride-based pesticide in foods, which have been set at levels that dwarf the amount allowed in tap water. In just one case, the EPA is allowing 900 parts per million of fluoride in dried eggs, as opposed to the maximum 4 ppm allowed in tap water. One third of the nation’s eggs are sold and consumed in dried, reconstituted form.

This was the basis of the research in the 1930s of May, Litzka, Gorlitzer von Mundy, who used fluoride preparations to treat over-active thyroid illness. Their patients either drank fluoridated water, swallowed fluoride pills or were bathed in fluoridated bath water; and their thyroid function was as a result, greatly depressed. The use in 1937 of fluorotyrosine for this purpose showed how effective this treatment was; but the effectiveness was difficult to predict and many patients suffered total thyroid loss. So it was given a new role and received a new name, Pardinon. It was marketed not for over-active thyroid disease but as a pesticide. (Note the manufacturer of fluorotyrosine was IG Farben who also made sarin, a gas used in World War II).

This bit of history illustrates the fact that fluorides are dangerous in general and in particular highly damaging to the thyroid gland, a matter to which I shall return shortly. While it is unlikely that it will be disputed that fluorides are toxic - let us be reminded that they are Schedule 2 Poisons under the Poisons Act 1972, the matter in dispute is the level of toxicity attributable to given amounts; in today's context the degree of damage caused by given concentrations in the water supply. While admitting its toxicity, proponents rely on the fact that it is diluted and therefore, it is claimed, unlikely to have deleterious effects.

As in Desert Storm and the March 2003 attack, it must be expected that the US-UK bombers will prefer to go into action during the dark of the moon, when planes are harder to locate. The new moons of the last quarter of 2005 are as follows:

October 3
November 2
December 1

Everything points to one of these new moons as the period of maximum danger of a US-UK sneak attack on Iran. Working backward, we can assume that the new 9/11 provocation that must furnish the pretext for this attack will have to take place several days to two weeks earlier, in order to orchestrate public opinion and complete last-minute military preparations. We have therefore already entered the danger zone for spectacular terrorist events staged by the rogue network infesting the key departments and agencies of the US government. It is time for a political mobilization to stop these events from happening.

These people are scary, but Horowitz's behavior has been particularly reprehensible. Unlike Calderon, he has not apologized for publishing the death threat. Worse yet, to date he has so far failed to publicly defend one of his own writers from serious charges. Calderon may be fired from his job and suffer a significant financial and career setback as a result of remarks posted on Horowitz's own Web site, and presumably authorized by Horowitz himself or one of his employees. Horowitz, however, takes no responsibility, offers no apology, and goes about his business of smearing the antiwar movement and anyone who opposes the Regime as if nothing is amiss. On this matter we get from him something we don't often get to enjoy: complete silence. A true rarity, to be sure. But how long can it last?

Tom Flocco Officially Discredited

Do you ever wonder why “conspiracy theorists” and other Internet news services aren’t taken seriously? It’s because of sensationalistic horse’s asses like Tom Flocco, who has yet again put-out completely unsubstantiated information, this time in regard to perjury and obstruction of justice indictments being issued to George Bush, Dick Cheney, Andrew Card, Scooter Libby, John Ashcroft, Mary Matalin, and Alberto Gonzalez. Remarkably, not one other news source in the entire world has come forth with this same information, either in the mainstream or the alternative media - only Tom Flocco. Worse, Flocco has a history of releasing similar news reports, and likewise creating hysterias with absolutely no proof to back them up. The latest example was when he (and others of his ilk) said gay GOP plant Jeff Gannon was actually Johnny Gosch, who was kidnapped when he was nine years old. Of course there hasn’t been a single stitch of actual evidence to support these claims, but from their perspective, why should that bother us? Isn’t conjecture good enough? So, Flocco poisoned the Internet with this crap, appeared on numerous radio talk shows, and essentially duped a wide array of people with this wild goose chase; and he’s been pulling similar stunts for years.

But the problem with this type of “cowboy journalism” extends much deeper than to stooges like Tom Flocco. What really disturbs us at WING TV is how many knee-jerk idiotic trained-monkey fools ran with this obviously absurd 'indictment story' and posted it across the Internet and on message boards. They did this, of course, with no corroborating evidence, no sourcing, and no verification. They simply spread the lies like wildfire; and thus, in effect, discredited the entire alternative media in the process. This, regrettably, is what they call disinformation. So, all I can say to everyone who took part in this nonsense is: you should be ashamed of yourselves. By falling hook-line-and-sinker for this ruse, you made us all look bad --- so STOP IT!

To be sure, international finance economists also see US exports benefiting as the value of the dollar declines, but the lags in demand are such that the export boost will come a year or two after the decline in consumption and investment spending. Eight million to 10 million people will have to shift employment from services and construction into exports and import-competing goods, implying that structural unemployment will rise.

Moreover, there may be a financial panic: Large financial institutions with short-term liabilities and long-term assets will have a difficult time weathering a large rise in long-term dollar-denominated interest rates. This mismatch can cause financial stress and bankruptcy just as easily as banks' local-currency assets and dollar liabilities caused stress and bankruptcy in the Mexican and East Asian crises of the 1990s and in the Argentinean crisis of this decade.

From 1945 to the early years of the 21st century, the US attempted to overthrow more than 40 foreign governments and to crush more than 30 populist movements fighting against insufferable regimes. In the process, they bombed about 25 countries, killed several million people, and condemned many millions more to lives of agony, poverty and despair. Oh yes, and they’re presently sabre-rattling against Iran and, maybe, North Korea. [Forgive me if I’ve forgotten any military excursion here; it’s hard to keep track. And I do concede that Korea and Iraq (1991) were different because they occurred under the aegis of the United Nations; but my that does not deflect from my point that this a bellicose group.

A scathing report by Inspector General John Helgerson criticized the former CIA director and a score of other agency personnel for their failure to develop a strategy against al Qaeda. The report, delivered to Congress this week, recommends punitive sanctions for Mr. Tenet, former Deputy Director of Operations James L. Pavitt and former counter-terrorist center head J. Cofer Black. Mr. Tenet's response to the report is a 20-page, tightly knitted rebuttal of responsibility prepared with the aid of a lawyer, according to the friendly source.

And in 1982, Oded Yinon, an official from the Israeli Foreign Affairs office, wrote: "To dissolve Iraq is even more important for us than dissolving Syria. In the short term, it's Iraqi power that constitutes the greatest threat to Israel. The Iran-Iraq war tore Iraq apart and provoked its downfall. All manner of inter-Arab conflict help us and accelerate our goal of breaking up Iraq into small, diverse pieces."

The Bush administration is seeking to appoint a lawyer with little immigration or customs experience to head the troubled law enforcement agency that handles those issues, prompting sharp criticism from some employee groups, immigration advocates and homeland security experts.

The push to appoint Julie Myers to head the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, part of the Department of Homeland Security, comes in the midst of intense debate over the qualifications of department political appointees involved in the sluggish response to Hurricane Katrina

Gesell squired Atta around Venice and Sarasota in his cab on a number of occasions. What raises suspicions that he may have been working for more than just tips is this: after starting his new job on the day of Atta’s return, Gesell quit a month later, just one day after Atta left town for the last time.

If Gessell is shown to have taken part in unacknowledged U.S. military surveillance of Atta continuing until just before the attack, it would not be uncharacteristic...

Could this be the future of the rightwing cabal that has dominated talk radio for the past 10 years? The two media phenomena share generally the same audience of Americans who lack the skills or intelligence to think for themselves. And, similarly, the rightwing talker’s leadership is dominated by scandal-prone hypocrites who project an aura of moral rectitude while, in fact, they are beset with human foibles and failures just like everyone else.

Delegates at an international conference on women and Islam have heard a strong condemnation of female genital mutilation - the practice known as female circumcision.

The controversial topic was not part of the official agenda, but came up in discussions on domestic violence.

200 women are attending the conference

The organisers say the practice is not recommended in the Koran, and has too often been mistaken by people in the West as an Islamic custom.

This federal legislation, orchestrated by the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith will lead to creation of a vast anti-hate bureaucracy in America, similar to what now exists in Canada. In Canada it is a "hate crime" to publicly criticize such federally protected groups as homosexuals and Jews. In Canada free speech talk radio no longer exists. It is even illegal now in some areas to evangelize or "proselytize" in public.

HR2662, S1145, while ostensibly punishing only violent hate crimes, nevertheless creates an anti-hate bureaucracy through several means:

NEW ORLEANS IS SINKING

Here is an interesting map, below, of the home towns of Iraqi War fatalities.

http://icasualties.org/oif/images/US_City.jpg

The war is not being fought by those usually lumped in together when thinking of American soldiers. Not by farm boys from Kansas or Iowa.  Nor by poor boys from the Mississippi delta or from the hillbilly sections of the South.  Or if it is, these types of soldiers tend to die less often than those soldiers from America's major urban regions.

Note the clusters.  Boston to Northern VA (urban Mass, BTW; not western Mass); Pittsburgh to Detroit; Chicago to Milwaukee; urban centers in the Midwest & Rockies; LA-SF-Seattle.  A few Interstate highway corridors.   Interesting how the ‘South’ in general has a very dispersed arrangements of home towns.  So it is not the Confederate Army, any more.  And these are not just the Blue States, but also the Blue Counties in the Blue States

The mini-mart, long ago cleaned out by looters, was nonetheless bathed in light, including the empty, roped-off gas pumps. The motorcade route through the district was partially lit no more than 30 minutes before POTUS drove through. And yet last night, no more than an hour after the President departed, the lights went out. The entire area was plunged into total darkness again, to audible groans. It's enough to make some of the folks here who witnessed it... jump to certain conclusions.

FEMA bureaucrats yesterday infuriated exhausted Hurricane Katrina responders and lawmakers with yet another blunder.

Federal Emergency Management Agency leaders ordered officials in the agency's Preparedness Division to stop all Katrina relief efforts and begin a long-planned move from agency headquarters to new offices in Virginia by Monday.

"They're no longer focused on the gigantic Katrina job and are putting their files into boxes instead," said one outraged FEMA insider. "This is simply incredible considering that the entire staff has been an integral part of the response effort."

Taking staff off hurricane duty is "disruptive when we need every single soul here to work on Katrina," the source said.

[I wonder what Mr. Israel’s religious background is.]
Mr. Marino's narrative starts on the last trading day of December 1998, more than three years after Bayou was founded by Samuel Israel III, a scion of a commodity-trading family that is well known to Wall Street. On that final day of a tumultuous year in the markets - three months earlier, another hedge fund known as Long-Term Capital Management had nearly collapsed, causing widespread disruption in the financial world - Mr. Israel called two of his colleagues into a conference room.

All three men knew the situation was dire at Bayou - the funds' losses had vastly overwhelmed their gains for more than two years. Something had to be done, and fast.

The solution, devised by Mr. Israel and a lieutenant, James Marquez, was simple: produce a fake audit of the funds' performance and try to make up the losses next year.
...
And while Mr. Israel came off as a spirited, affable prankster to outsiders, to close associates he could be demeaning and threatening, even to the point of wielding a gun at Mr. Marino in 2002 when he refused to follow Mr. Israel's orders, according to Mr. Marino's letter.

"We're going to be attacked" has been their mantra. As predicted several years ago by myself and others, this is all nothing more than a smoke screen to keep everyone's adrenaline pumping. The expression is indeed true that time proves all things. The true reality is, there is NO WAY to prevent an attack no matter what anyone does, or whatever police state measures are in place. Consider London, which has more than 2 million cameras (British government statement.) Yet three bombs go off at the same time? Proof positive cameras do NOT work. It proves that cameras serve only to spy on citizens, and have nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism

A key point to note in the presidential determination is the waiver that allows support for Venezuela’s “democratic institutions” to continue. This is important because a drug war decertification generally implies blocking a country from international aid and loans. So, while aid to Venezuelan “democracy” (code for funding the opposition to President Chávez, most recently seen in the National Endowment for Democracy’s $107,000 grant to Súmate this week) will be allowed to continue, Venezuela will most likely be cut off from other forms of aid and loans from institutions like the World Bank

Federal officials appear to be seeking proof to blame the flood of New Orleans on environmental groups, documents show.

The Clarion-Ledger has obtained a copy of an internal e-mail the U.S. Department of Justice sent out this week to various U.S. attorneys' offices: "Has your district defended any cases on behalf of the (U.S.) Army Corps of Engineers against claims brought by environmental groups seeking to block or otherwise impede the Corps work on the levees protecting New Orleans? If so, please describe the case and the outcome of the litigation."

Cynthia Magnuson, a spokeswoman for the Justice Department, said Thursday she couldn't comment "because it's an internal e-mail."

SEPTEMBER 16--One of President George W. Bush's nephews--the youngest son of Florida Governor Jeb Bush--was arrested early today and charged with public drunkenness and resisting arrest. John Ellis Bush, 21, was nabbed at 2:30 AM by Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission agents in Austin (Jeb Jr.'s street corner arrest came in one of the capitol's popular bar districts). According to the below arrest warrant, filed with the Travis County Municipal Court, an intoxicated Bush, "continually pushed against this officer and struggled as I attempted to handcuff him." After about four hours in custody, Bush was released on $2500 bond for the resisting count (the intox charge was covered by a personal recognizance bond). This is the second time young Jeb--pictured at far right in the above family portrait--has landed on a police blotter. In October 2000, Jeb, then 16, and a girlfriend were discovered naked from the waist down in a Jeep Cherokee parked at a Tallahassee mall. Jebby's siblings, George and Noelle, have also had well-publicized run-ins with the fuzz. (2 pages)

The Constant Gardener: A movie gets it right about Africa and international conspiracies to hurt and kill the innocent. The screen adaptation of John Le Carre's thriller, The Constant Gardener, gets two thumbs up from this veteran of covering Africa's victimization by multinational corporations, weapons smugglers, and the "misery industry." The movie's main plot is a scheme by a consortium of international pharmaceutical companies to use AIDS and tuberculosis-infected Africans as human guinea pigs: plying them with untested drugs with fatal side effects. The conspiracy is sanctioned by the highest levels of the British government, professional "do-gooder" aid organizations, and corrupt African government officials in Kenya and Zimbabwe. There is even a reference to a Mossad agent who is apparently involved in the conspiracy with a Kenyan government minister.
